Today was exciting.

Ari realized today I get a little anxious when she leaves, so we did some short periods of separation training. She’d get all ready like she was going to leave the apartment (I get very excited when she gets her jacket and shoes on), and then she’d leave and close the door behind her. I whined, and ran around looking for her. She could hear me crying from down the hall. She opened the door real quick and say “Quiet”!, then leave again. I was pretty confused and upset, but when I quieted down a little bit, she came back in. She didn’t say anything or pet me for a couple minutes, but then she did! I’m not sure what it all means yet, but I guess we’ll keep working on it.

Then we went to the local pet store! Everyone fawned over me. I was pretty good but that place was so exciting. I got a new harness so I can’t pull so hard, and some pig snouts (Man, I Love those!), a chew, rope toy, and a kong that I only get when she leaves. We walked around a playground.

Then after we took a nap (Ari’s a graveyard-shift worker!), we took a walk around the neighborhood. It was opening night at the theater and there were so many people who pet me! Lots of lights and cars and stuff. We walked around a park and I jumped in a fountain and splashed around! Ari didn’t know I loved water so much but now that she does, I think she’ll take me swimming.

A clerk let me into the store while she bought a soda, because I’m so special!

When we got home, I spent some time with the kitty. She stares at me a lot and hisses if I walk up to her too fast but she’s getting closer and closer to me and sniffs me when I’m asleep. I can’t wait to be friends with her.

As you can see, I’m very tired. What a good day!Sleepy Koda

I live in Portland, OR, with my boyfriend, a cat, and a turtle. Today we adopted 3-yr old male black lab Koda from the Oregon Humane Society. His rear right leg was amputated four months ago--they say he was hit by a car, and when the broken leg became infected, it had to go. Didn't slow him down one bit!

  1. Good day indeed! Sounds like you found your place in the world! Now just work on the separation thing and you will be fine. Just remember Ari will come back for you! She loves you very much!!! Looks like you are spoiled already sleeping on the couch!

  2. Koda… you are beautiful!!! It sounds like you’re already being very spoiled and loved… Just work on that separation anxiety… your new mommy loves you and will always come back…

    Congratulations Ari!!!

  3. Koda, you are just a beautiful dog! Congratulations on your new home… it’s clear that your mom loves you very much. It sounds like you are having a lot of fun. If your mom does take you swimming, make sure she takes lots of pictures so you can share them with us!

  4. Koda, what a great day!!
It took me a while to “get” the fur balls, cats, but after I got used them, I don’t even pay attention to them anymore.
Enjoy your furever home, seeing my pawrents leave is really tuff but I’ve learned they come home after something they call “work.”
see you soon, Shelby, the P.P.

  5. Hey Koda, I always let my pawrents know how much I miss them too, even when they just go outside to take the trash out (which is silly for them to do that alone because I can help get rid of it here in the house!).

My pawrents call it “separation anxiety” but I call it showing them LOVE! Silly they think that it has to be “cured” but oh well. I get treats when we try. Keep up the great work my friend, you’ll be just fine.

  6. swimming is my favorite thing to do, but now it is winter and the water is stiff enough to walk on so I will have to wait until breakup…May seems soooo far away. I wish I had a pool in my house like Wolfie!

Koda…I know it is hard to believe, but good moms and dads always come back. Try not to worry. – Opie
